Over 250 representatives of Polish communities abroad from 44 countries are taking part in the congress, including delegates from the Polish American Congress, the Canadian Polish Congress, European Union of Polish Communities, Congress of Poles in Russia, the Convention of Poles in Germany, as well as representatives of the Polish community in Lithuania, Ukraine, Hungary and Brazil.

Before the congress opened, veterans were taken to the Grave of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw.

One of the issues being discussed is the change made this year to financing projects for Poles abroad – which is now in the hands of the Foreign Ministry and not the Senate, the upper house of parliament, as has been the case up until now.

Senate speaker Bogdan Borusewicz says that drawing up any conclusions on the new financing system should wait till next year, when it can be more fully assessed.

The IV Polonia Congress will end Sunday (pg)
