The Polish language Nowy Dziennik newspaper has been coordinating the aid collected by Polish-Americans and Polish priests are working in the coastal Far Rockaway parish, one of the worst effected as high winds caused flooding and a storm surge measuring 13 feet.

Fire broke out in the Rockaway area damaging 50 buildings About 670,000 homes and businesses were without power throughout the city.

Two weeks later, and the area is still picking up the pieces.

Local priest Władysław Kubrak told Polish Radio that people are “beginning to wake up and wonder if it was a movie. But the sad truth is that this is a fact”. (pg)
