Bogdan G. (full name withheld under Polish privacy laws) was detained under a European Arrest Warrant in Bilbao by Spanish police.

The 40-year-old Pole had been using false identity documents and was apprehended outside the flat where he had been living.

Prior to fleeing Poland, Bogdan G. is understood to have stolen cars to order, and he also dealt in diamonds.

Police claim that he became involved in a dispute over a stolen Mercedes with two members of a gang of organised criminals from Warsaw's Pruszkow district, an area once notorious for crime.

Bogdan G. allegedly shot both men, and threw their bodies out onto the street from the speeding car.

Police spokesman Mariusz Sokolowski has confirmed that Spanish policemen have notified Polish authorities about the arrest, and that Poland will seek to set the extradition process in motion as soon as possible.

However, he also noted that Bogdan G. is under suspicion of committing crimes in several European countries, and that accordingly, Poland may not be the only country seeking extradition of the suspect. (nh)
