33-year-old Roman Najdzinowicz risked his life after a fire engulfed an apartment in Dublin's Shankill village, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Sarah Martin was asleep together with her three-year-old daughter and baby son when the fire broke out in the second floor flat.

Najdzinowicz and a Hungarian neighbour first tried to break down the door of the woman's flat.

The pair managed to force open the door, but could not reach the baby's bedroom, owing to billowing smoke.

The Pole then tried another route.

“He was climbing up the balconies on the outside of the building,” Roman's wife Sylwia told the Irish Independent.

“He climbed up onto the balcony of the burning apartment and started to try and break in the door of the apartment.”

Thankfully, the fire brigade arrived and took control of the scenario. There were no fatalities, although Martin and her children were treated in hospital owing to excessive smoke inhalation.

Daniel Kane, the children's father, said that he was “so grateful for everything that was done."

Kane had not been in the flat at the time of the blaze.

“We have lovely neighbours but what happened when the men tried to save my family will never be forgotten by us.” (nh)
