Joe Biden congratulates new Polish PM

New PM Ewa Kopacz has spoken on the telephone with US vice-president Joe Biden, who thanked Poland for its “leadership of the Ukraine crisis” and “contributions to international security”.

Just hours after she was officially sworn as head of government in Warsaw – taking over from the seven-year premiership of Donald Tusk, who takes up the position of president of the European council in December – PM Kopacz spoke with Joe Biden on international security and trade issues.

The Prime Minister's office says in a statement that Biden congratulated Ewa Kopacz on her new position and said that Poland had, “strengthened the backbone of the European Union and NATO”.

Prime Minister Kopacz pledged to “maintain the momentum and development of cooperation with the USA in the field of security, defence and economy," says the statement.

A White House statement says that Biden, “underscored that Poland is one of the United States closest allies and thanked Prime Minister Kopacz for Poland's contributions to international security, and for its leadership on the crisis in Ukraine”.

The White House says that US Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker would be leading a delegation of the Presidents Export Council to Poland on 28 September.

Poland's president, Bronislaw Komorowski is currently in New York for the UN General Assembly and will be meeting with president Barack Obama on Tuesday.

The US and allies said to include Arab nations launched the first air strikes against Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria, the Pentagon said on Tuesday.

Poland has said it would be part of the coalition fighting the militants in Iraq an Syria although its precise role has yet to be established.

The United States has agreed to authorize the sale to Poland of advanced AGM-158 cruise missiles, it was announced at the weekend, with the intention of increasing Poland’s deterrence capabilities in the wake of the Ukraine crisis. (pg)
