"Polish-German relations are in very good condition,” Chancellor Merkel said after the lunchtime talks, adding that Warsaw and Berlin were close on “the situation in Ukraine and cooperation within NATO”.

“We agreed that the EU must speak with one voice on Ukraine,” Ewa Kopacz said, on her second trip abroad after taking over from Donald tusk as prime minister.

The talks precede an EU summit on 23 and 24 October, where the 28-nation bloc will try to thrash out a common stand on CO2 emission cuts. The European Commission said in July that it wants to see 30 percent cuts by 2030, though Prime Minister Kopacz has said that the policy must not lead to more expensive energy costs for Polish consumers.

PM Kopacz is also visiting Paris on Thursday for talks with President Francois Hollande. (pg)
