Since 1 January 2015, all transport companies active on German soil have been obliged to pay drivers EUR 8.5 per hour, the country's minimum wage.

Some 13 EU countries, including the Baltic States, Hungary, Romania and the United Kingdom, are all objecting to the new law.

The European Commission has also called for clarification from Berlin on the matter, indicating thay Germany may have breached EU law.

It has been estimated that about 100,000 licensed Polish lorry-drivers pass through German territory. (nh)
