According to Argentinian authorities, the victim was part of a group of Poles who had scaled the summit on Wednesday.

The 52-year-old reportedly lost consciousness at the peak, and immediate attempts to resuscitate him were in vain.

The death comes less than a fortnight after a British mountaineer collapsed and died 500m from the summit.

Aconcagua, which rises to 6,960.8m above sea level, is not only the highest mountain in the Andes, but also the highest of any mountain outside Asia.

Local authorities have pledged to retrieve the man's body from the summit on Thursday, if weather permits. (nh)
