A Frenchman has been caught by the Polish border guards attempting to smuggle his Russian wife into the country in a suitcase.
According to Polish authorities, the incident occurred on 13 March, and the man had attempted to cross the border from Belarus, it has been disclosed.
Border guards were struck be the unusual size of the man's suitcase, and on opening it they were surprised to find a fully-grown woman inside.
The man could face three years behind bars, yet officials have pointed out that as the woman is indeed married to the Frenchman, she could have entered the country legally, and there was no need for the suitcase scheme.
"Had she been sitting next to her husband, she would have made it through without incident," Polish Border Guard spokesman Dariusz Sienicki told Agence France Presse. (nh)
