Current events have replaced history as the chief determinant of Polish attitudes to the Germans, as differing attitudes to Russia mar otherwise friendly relations.

For 37 percent of Poles, this different in approaching Russian imperialism is the most important problem in relations with Germany, an Institute of Public Affairs report finds.

While most Poles believe Germany has respect for other European nations, fully 47 percent believe that Poland is not treated as an equal partner.

Around two-thirds of Poles believe mutual relations are good with a further 4 percent putting them in the “very good” category. With a quarter unable to decide how to describe these relations, the number seeing mutual relations as poor or very poor is negligible.

While history has ceased to shape attitudes to Germany, age continues to be relevant: the younger a person, the more likely they are to hold positive views of the Germans. (an)
