Polish conservative opposition Law and Justice (PiS) was accused of using the European Parliament for purposes of a domestic election campaign by inviting an expert for its investigation into the Smolensk air crash.

Dr Bogdan Gajewski works on the PiS investigation into the causes of the April 10, 2010 plane crash that killed President Lech Kaczyński, the PiS leader’s twin brother, and nearly 100 others in Russia.

His speech at the joint session of the European Parliament’s foreign affairs committee and defence subcommittee was interrupted, as German members reproached Anna Fotyga, the PiS chairperson of the defence subcommittee, for abusing the Brussels institution for the purposes of domestic politics.

In his speech at a session of airspace security in conflict regions, Gajewski said that the Polish presidential “plane was shot down”.

The German MEPs who interrupted him, pointed out the European Parliament has already issued a statement on the Smolensk crash. (an)
