A number of international politicians and historians have been invited to attend the 70th anniversary of VE day celebrations in Poland, the Presidential Chancellery has confirmed.

The celebrations in Gdańsk's Westerplatte will be held on 7-8 May.

The attendees will include the Presidents of Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine, as well as the General Secretary of the UN, as well as the head of the European Council.

Polish President Bronisław Komorowski said in late April that the main part of the celebrations to mark the end of the Second World War will be held on 7 May.

“The climax of the event will be a panel attended by the presidents and other representatives of European countries, who [will] reflect on what the conclusion of World War II did for their own countries, societies, and the whole of Europe,” Komorowski said.

This, the president said, will be preceded by a panel of historians. On Monday, the Presidential Chancellery confirmed that these will include: Timothy Snyder (US), Yuriy Afanasiev (Russia), Norman Davies (UK), Georges-Henri Soutou (France), Andrzej Paczkowski (Poland), as well as Stefan Troebst (Germany). Judy Dempsey, a senior associate at Carnegie Europe will moderate the discussion. (rg)
