Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) announced the arrest of a group of drug mules who were trying to smuggle 500 kg of heroin over the Ukrainian-Polish border of Jagodzin-Dorohusk.

This is a record drug catch in the history of independent Ukraine, SBU said.

SBU also said on Friday that during the drug bust it arrested a “citizen of one of the European countries” as well as five Ukrainians.

The press office of the Security Service said that “due to the interests of the investigation”, it refused to provide information about the country of origin of the EU citizen who was detained.

The drugs arrived in Ukraine via Iran, and were valued by SBU as having a value of UAH 1.4 billion (over PLN 246 million). The drugs were hidden in rolls of insulation bitumen which were being transported by truck.

SBU stressed that the police action was conducted in collaboration with foreign secret services. (rg)
