Britons who stole from Auschwitz released

Two teenagers who took items from the grounds of the Auschwitz Birkenau camp in southern Poland have been fined and released.

The two 17-year-old students of The Perse school in Cambridge were released by Polish police and fined PLN 1,000 (EUR 250) for taking several items from the grounds of the former Nazi death camp.

A spokesperson for the GBP 15,000-a-year (PLN 88,000, EUR 21,000) Perse school said, “The boys, neither of whom is yet 18, picked up the fragments in the Canada section of the camp. They cooperated fully with the authorities and admitted taking the items. They are deeply sorry for the offence they have caused.”

When first arrested Police said the two students – who were visiting the site as part of a school trip – could face up to 10 years in prison.

Among the items pocketed by the teenagers were a piece of spoon, two pieces of glass, and two buttons. (rg)
