Moscow has called on the US to discontinue plans to install a missile defence shield in Europe, including in Poland, after the US agreed an arms deal recently with Iran.

“We see no reason for its continuation [after the Iran deal] ... Even more so at an accelerated pace,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told news agency TASS.

“For the Russian Federation it is unthinkable to use ballistic medium-range missiles against targets in Europe. Only terrorists, but who by definition are not able to take possession of such weapons and operate them, would do this,” Ryabkov said.

The US missile defense complex (EIS) was to be located near Redzikowo, a village in northern Poland, but was cancelled in 2009 and subsequently replaced with a phased plan: the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System, which will include SM-3 Block IIA interceptors to be positioned in Poland from 2018.

After many months of diplomacy, the US, the UK, France, China, Russia, Germany and the European Union signed a long-term comprehensive nuclear deal with Iran to prevent the latter from acquiring a nuclear weapon and ensure that Iran's nuclear programme will be exclusively peaceful. (jh/rk)
