The figure of 2, 320 000 represents Poles who are technically living abroad 'temporarily'.

According to GUS data, about 124,000 more Poles were in such a situation at the end of 2014 than a year beforehand.

The largest particular rise was in Germany, where the number of Poles increased by almost 10 percent, up 54,000 on the close of 2013.

The United Kingdom also witnessed an upward trend in terms of Polish immigration, with a rise of 6.7 percent, up about 43,000.

Another rise was to be found in the Netherlands, while the least popular destinations were Cyprus and Portugal.

The exodus from Poland began in 2004, when the country joined the European Union.

There was a dip in Poles moving abroad between 2008 and 2010. However, recent years have shown an upward trend.

GUS has stressed that the latest figures should be regarded as approximate.(nh/rk)
