“Poland will allocate PLN 8 million to the [European] Union's programme to assist refugees,” the Polish head of government told a press conference on Monday.

She explained that money from contributing EU countries will be used, among others, to supply food, water and cleaning products.

“At the last European Council we decided that a very comprehensive plan to deal with this crisis must be implemented.

"The huge crisis – which is also humanitarian – requires adequate funds. The process must be very consistent, that is, the [improvement of] hotspots – points where refugees will be validated and directed to particular countries and areas – a good return policy, as well as assistance for refugees who are currently in the camps. This all requires adequate investment,” Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz said.

Hundreds of thousands of refugees from the Middle East have landed in Europe and are seeking asylum in countries such as Germany and the UK. Poland is to take on some 9,000 refugees from Italy and Greece as part of an EU plan. (rg/rk)
