The Polish Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) has released a book indicating that the Bulgarian Special Service masterminded the 1981 attempt on the life of John Paul II.

A new book by the IPN "Agca was not alone. Around the participation of the communist special services in the assassination attempt on John Paul II" investigates claims that the Turkish shooter Ali Agca was in fact acting on orders of the Bulgarian government.

The authors of the book – Andrzej Grabowski from the "Gość Niedzielny" catholic weekly and the IPN resident prosecutor Michał Skwara – indicate that there is "no doubt" that the assassination attempt on the Pope was masterminded by the Bulgarians, while representatives of other Communist countries led separate “disinformation” operations.

The first part of the book is a multi-page dissertation on the decision not to prosecute written by Skwara, while the second part deals with a historical analysis by Grajewski. (rg/rk)
