Poles and Latvians are being recruited for Islamic State (IS), Lithuania's State Security Department has said.

Artūras Paulauskas, the chairman of Lithuanian Parliament’s National Security and Defence Committee (NSGK), said a couple dozen Polish and Latvian citizens are reportedly fighting side by side with ISIS extremists in Iraq and Syria.

“Indeed, there are people in Latvia and Poland who today fight for the Islamic State. The numbers, however, are not very large in comparison with the citizens of Russia, France, Germany and Belgium. However, they are there,” Paulauskas was reported by the Baltic News Network as saying.

A report submitted for the NSGK said that “the number of recruits from Latvia and Poland is put at ten, but the real number could be way bigger”. (tf/rg)
