“We hope the US will be able to show diplomacy and disregard confrontations,” the Russian foreign ministry stated on Monday in response to the stockpiling of weapons in Poland.

The United States is planning to create storage facilities for heavy military machinery (to equip approximately 5,000 soldiers) until the end of 2016 in Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania and Poland, as well as in Hungary until 2017.

The storage of such machinery by the US in Central and Eastern Europe would require “a permanent military presence”, the spokeswoman for Russia’s foreign ministry, Maria Zakharova stated.

Such a situation will “border on a violation of a key provision of the Founding Act between NATO and Russia from 1997”, Zakharova added.

“In accordance with the act, the Alliance committed itself to not placing permanent combat forces on the territory of these countries,” she explained. (ua/rg)
