Deputy Foreign Minister Konrad Szymański has held talks with the head of the European Commission's delegation to Poland, Marzenna Guz-Vetter, to discuss recent hard-hitting comments by senior European politicians.

“Communication between Poland and Brussels has not been the best for a long time, and this gives rise to various theories,” Szymański told reporters following the meeting on Friday.

Szymański said that Poland wants to the European Commission to treat it like any other country in the European Union.

“For Poland, media pluralism and respect for the rule of law is a just as important element of the [government’s] policy as it is for the European Union, therefore it was relatively easy to explain our position,” Szymański said.

The meeting was announced earlier this week by Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski.

“We will invite [the EU representative] for a friendly talk so they can explain the nature of recent pronouncements by some politicians,” Waszczykowski told Polish Radio on Tuesday.

“Maybe the EU’s representative in Poland will know what kind of new procedures these are by which 'megaphone diplomacy' is being carried out towards Poland in the media,” Waszczykowski added.

Waszczykowski was speaking after the European Commission announced that it will hold a debate on “the rule of law in Poland” on 13 January. (rg/pk)
