The European Parliament has decided it will not vote on a resolution about the state of democracy in Poland at its upcoming February session, the PAP news agency has reported.

But the topic of sweeping changes introduced by Poland's new government could resurface in the European Parliament in March or April, according to the IAR news agency.

In a European Parliament debate on 19 January, Prime Minister Beata Szydło fended off concerns that her new government has eroded democracy in Poland.

She rebutted criticism of changes to the media and judiciary introduced by her Law and Justice (PiS) government, which came to power after a landslide win in Poland’s 25 October general elections.

Meanwhile, the European Commission has launched a probe into whether controversial laws pushed through by PiS violate EU standards. (pk)
