Speaking in Brussels ahead of a meeting of defence ministers from NATO countries scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, Stoltenberg said the officials are expected to agree on an enhanced presence in the eastern part of the Alliance, Poland’s PAP agency reported.

“Effective deterrence and defence requires both forward presence of Allied forces, and our ability to reinforce them quickly,” said Stoltenberg.

Beefing up NATO in Central and Eastern Europe is a key goal for Poland, which considers Russia, its giant neighbour to the east, a major potential threat to its security.

Warsaw is to host a NATO summit 8-9 July.

The Czech minister for European affairs, Tomas Prouza, has told Poland’s PAP news agency that Prague will support Warsaw in its efforts to secure a permanent NATO military presence in Poland. (pk)
