Relations excellent, but don’t decide for us, Polish PM tells Berlin

Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło has said that relations between Warsaw and Berlin are “excellent” but added that Germany should not take certain key decisions over Poland’s head.

In an interview published by Germany’s Bild daily ahead of her scheduled meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday, Szydło also said that Berlin has made mistakes in its policy towards refugees
"There is no doubt that our relations [with Germany] are excellent,” she said.
Szydło added: “Germany is for us an important and close partner in Europe. However, we would appreciate it if some decisions were not made over our heads.”
She pointed to the planned Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline which is to connect Russia and Germany, bypassing Poland. The planned pipeline "simply bypasses Poland and the EU did not take Polish interests into account," Szydło said.
She added: "We would like our German partners to be on our side."
Asked by Bild if she feared the consequences of Merkel's welcoming policy towards refugees, Szydło said: “The weakening of Germany makes Europe unstable. But we have to admit that mistakes were made." (pk)
