The commander of the US military forces in Europe, general Ben Hodges said: “I saw it as a great training opportunity to exercise the NATO Forces Immigration Units (NFIU), to exercise the freedom of movement.”

The exercises will take place simultaneously at several training grounds across Poland between 7-17 June, and 25,000 NATO troops from more than 20 countries are set to take part.

Since Russia’s Crimea annexation in 2014, and the subsequent escalating tension in eastern Ukraine, NATO has expanded the number of military exercises and increased the reaction forces in the region from 13,000 to 40,000 troops. (tf/rg)
