The brief talks took place on Thursday evening before a supper for leaders attending a Nuclear Security Summit in the US capital.

"During a meeting at the White House President Andrzej Duda held a bilateral, face to face talk with President Barack Obama. The conversation focused mainly on nuclear issues," said Krzysztof Szczerski, a senior aide to Duda.

Szczerski added that the two presidents discussed preparations for July’s NATO summit in Warsaw, the issue of Poland’s Constitutional Court and the "discussion about how this political dispute in Poland is developing."

"President Andrzej Duda informed President Obama about the latest efforts undertaken in Poland, about a meeting of political parties - which the president welcomes - about the fact that there is a chance for a political compromise on the law on the Constitutional Tribunal," Szczerski said.

Representatives of eight political parties in Poland took part in talks on Thursday in a bid to resolve the country’s constitutional crisis, sparked by changes introduced to the Constitutional Tribunal by the ruling Law and Justice party.

Duda also told Obama that he would in the near future undertake efforts "relating to the regulation of matters involving the justice system, the Constitutional Tribunal in the Polish constitution." (pk)
