Gliding cup ends in tragedy for Polish pilot

A Polish pilot died after crashing his light aircraft on Wednesday during the Flight Challenge Cup Gliding 2016 event in Prievidza, Slovakia.

Marcin Mężyk, a member of an aero club in Rybnik, south western Poland, crashed into woodland at Lysá Poľana on the Slovak side of the Tatra Mountains, near the Polish border.

The accident occurred amid fierce winds, and all other gliders airborne at the time of the crash were requested to land immediately.

The Polish pilot died on the spot.

His club has stressed its grief over the loss, expressing condolences to the pilot's family.

Thursday marks the final day of the event in Prievidza. (nh/pk)
