Under a draft plan by the interior ministry, the checks will be in place from shortly before a NATO summit in Warsaw to shortly after the end of World Youth Day, which is being hosted by Poland in July.

Checks will be carried out at Poland’s borders with Germany, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Lithuania, as well as at ports and airports.

The aim is to prevent people “who could disrupt public order or otherwise pose a threat to security" from entering Poland, according to the interior ministry.

Unlike at Poland’s borders with countries outside the European Union, the checks will be carried out on selected people based on a risk analysis and information provided by the security services of other countries.

Earlier, Poland had been expected to introduce temporary border controls from 2 to 31 July.

A NATO summit is to take place 8-9 July at the National Stadium in the Polish capital, bringing together some 2,500 delegates, including heads of state and government, EU and United Nations leaders.

The Roman Catholic Church’s World Youth Day takes place from 25 July to 31 July, with millions of pilgrims expected to flock to Poland. Pope Francis is to attend the event.

Interior Minister Mariusz Błaszczak said last month that Poland will deploy an extra 13,000 police, border guards and other officers for the two international events. (pk)
