The Polish President is on a three-day visit to Italy, one of the hotspots in the immigration crisis, with millions of migrants from northern Africa have landed on the Italian shores following a perilous trip across the Mediterranean in the last few years.

“We agreed with Prime Minister [Renzi] that, when it comes to solving the migration crisis, it should be resolved [...] at its source, that is, where there is a difficult situation today, a situation of war, where people are fleeing, leave their homes, fearing for their lives, their future and their children, and the effect of this is the migration pressure,” Polish president Andrzej Duda said during a joint press conference on Monday.

Poland had earlier indicated that it is unwilling to take on refugees “because they pose a threat to the country’s security

The leader of the governing Law and Justice party, Jarosław Kaczyński also said that Poland would oppose European Commission proposals that would see EU member states having to pay EUR 250,000 per refugee if they refuse to accept their share of asylum-seekers. (rg)
