Poland needs to focus on direct support for countries affected by humanitarian crises, said Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło at the World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul.

“We are here because we do not agree to leaving many millions of people in the world without help and the chance to develop. Our presence [here today] is proof that, despite enormous efforts of countries, governments, communities, international organisations and NGOs, many people still do not have a chance for a decent life,” the Polish PM said.

“This year Poland has doubled its humanitarian aid,” Szydło added.

The two-day World Humanitarian Summit brings together 45 world leaders, 80 governments, and 250 representatives of civil society organisations and the private sector.

A total of 6,000 people are expected to take part. The participants of the summit are to work out an agenda for a collective response to the rising levels of humanitarian need in the world.

The delegates are to adopt policies and measures to facilitate international collaboration with the aim of delivering aid to civilians affected by natural disasters and armed conflict, government spokesman Rafał Bochenek told the PAP news agency. (rg/pk)
