The Polish vessel is to shore up international efforts to curb human trafficking and the inflow of migrants into Europe. NATO ships have been patrolling the Aegean Sea along the so-called Balkan migration route since February.

The decision was announced by President Andrzej Duda on Monday, following a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Warsaw.

Poland's contribution to the NATO mission in Greek and Turkish waters was one of the key topics on the agenda of talks between the Polish head of state and the chief of the North Atlantic Alliance. Other topics discussed between the two top officials included bolstering NATO's eastern flank and preparations ahead of the July summit in the Polish capital.

During a press conference held following the top-level talks, Stoltenberg said that the alliance would soon act on its decision to boost its presence in Central and Eastern Europe to ward off any threat from Russia.

"We have not made the final decisions on the exact numbers and exact locations, because these decisions will be made by heads of state and government at our summit here in Warsaw in a few weeks," he told journalists.

"We are now working on concrete proposals we have received from our strategic commanders. They have proposed several battalions in the Baltic countries and in Poland."

Following the meeting with President Duda, the NATO chief took part in further talks, attended by the Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz, Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski, and the head of the National Security Bureau, Paweł Soloch.

Stoltenberg is also meeting Prime Minister Beata Szydło on Tuesday. (aba/pk)
