Poland is prepared whether the United Kingdom decides to stay or leave the European Union in a referendum on Thursday, deputy Foreign Minister Konrad Szymański has said.

He added that the Polish government will persuade other EU members to calmly react to the outcome, so that a possible Brexit “does not serve to further decompose the Union”.

"Poland is obviously prepared for both [scenarios]. Today, we are well positioned to respond to a scenario in which the United Kingdom leaves the EU,” Szymański told Polish Radio on Monday.

Earlier in June, the heads of government of Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary – collectively known as V4 – expressed hope that the UK remains in the EU, noting that a decision on this matter belongs only to British citizens.

“Before us are a lot of difficult challenges and the Visegrad Group believes that dealing with them will be easier if the United Kingdom remains a member of the European Union,” the declaration signed by the four countries read.
