Britain has pledged to respect all rights that have been acquired by Poles living and working in the UK, Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło said on Wednesday after a meeting of the leaders of 27 EU countries in Brussels.

Szydło told a press conference that, following Britain’s referendum vote to leave the EU, the UK remains Poland’s strategic partner on economic and security issues.

Szydło said a debate is needed on the future of the European Union.

This will be “long and not easy”, she said, adding that it is important for Poland not to wave the outcome of the UK referendum aside.

Szydło told journalists: “In my address, I stressed that Poland received the decision of the British people with regret, but respects it as a sovereign decision of the British nation.” (mk/pk)
