On the second day of a visit to Slovakia, Duda together with his Slovak counterpart Andrej Kiska laid a wreath at the Gate of Freedom in Bratislava.
The monument commemorates 400 victims of communism who died 1948-1989 while illegal attempting to breach the Iron Curtain and cross the border between the then Czechoslovakia and Austria.
Duda said the ability of EU citizens to travel freely within the bloc "is a great achievement and this is what we feel is... the great value of European integration - that we have been able to overcome communism, that we live today in free countries, that we can move about freely."
EU achievements such as the free movement of people "are extremely important to our societies," he added. (pk)
