The article, by author and journalist Chris Hedges, is entitled “The New European Fascists.”

In a blog entry from the Truthdig website, reposted by washingtonsblog.com, Hedges says nationalist sentiments have been gaining in strength in Poland since the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) came to power in October elections.

Hedges said the sweeping changes that the ruling party has pushed through in recent months brings Poland closer to other European countries “devolving into proto-fascism.”

Szydło slammed the comments, saying: "This article is built on obvious slander and lies.”

She added that before writing an article about a given country, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author should "possess at least basic knowledge in this field."

"I assume that perhaps this has been inspired by politicians who do not wish the Polish state well," Szydło said.

She added: "We are committed to commenting on all forms of attack on the Polish state, of course in an appropriate way, and the foreign ministry... always takes such steps, but we are wondering if this text is worth it."

RT, the Kremlin's English-language TV channel formerly known as Russia Today, is regarded by many as a propaganda mouthpiece aiming to promote Moscow's interests.
