May took over as prime minister earlier this month after her predecessor David Cameron resigned in the wake of Britons' decision to leave the EU in a June referendum.

The key item on the agenda of the Warsaw talks will be the impact of Brexit on Polish nationals living in Britain, Szydło said ahead of the meeting.

Bilateral relations, and their future course once Britain completes its EU exit process will be another key issue discussed by the two prime ministers.

“We have very close bilateral ties, [Britain] is an important partner in the fields of economy, security and military collaboration,” Szydło said.

Poles in Britain have been targeted in numerous xenophobic incidents following the Brexit vote, including an arson hate crime attack in Plymouth, south-west England, in early July.

Unknown perpetrators set on fire a garden shed outside a Polish family's home, leaving behind a note saying, “Go back home” and warned that the family would “be next.” (aba/pk)
