"We want a good neighbourly relationship. But it has to be based on truth and mutual respect," Kaczyński told Bild, Germany's largest tabloid, in an interview published on Thursday.

He referred to the Our Mothers, Our Fathers German TV mini-series, which he accused of trying to shift some of the blame for Nazi crimes to Poles.

"Our history does not connect us, but rather divides us. What connects us is that we are neighbours and huge trade worth EUR 100 billion per year," said Kaczyński.

In the interview, Kaczyński also expressed support for German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the German parliamentary elections next year, saying that "from the Polish perspective, I say it would be good if she was re-elected."

Asked about EU issues, he said that the rule of law procedure launched against Poland by the EU Commission is "taking place completely outside the EU treaties."

He said that the EU needs less centralism and that the European single currency would not be a good idea for Poland right now. (mol)
