The flagship operation this year will be the Caucasus-16 exercises in August, which will be held near the border with Ukraine.

The Caucasus-16 manoeuvres will include troops belonging to the Southern Military District (located near the border with Ukraine) and the entire Black Sea Fleet, Aleksandr Vitko, the commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, said on Monday.

The military drills, which will start in mid-August, are of strategic importance to the Russian armed forces, niezalezna.pl said.

It added the Caucasus-16 operation is aimed at trying to find out the full combat capability of the whole spectrum of Russian armed forces in terms of both military weapons and equipment deployment.

The Kremlin regularly conducts similar exercises, which include both soldiers and reservists. (rg)
