During an event in Kiev's Maidan, or Independence Square, to mark 25 years of Ukrainian independence on Wednesday, Poroshenko thanked Polish President Andrzej Duda, who was in attendance, for the international support the country gave Ukraine during the conflict with Russia.
“Taking advantage of the presence here today of Polish President Andrzej Duda – a friend of mine and a great friend of Ukraine, I want to express my deep gratitude to our international partners for comprehensive, diplomatic and financial support for the supply of nonlethal [military equipment] and humanitarian aid. I would also like to thank you for the sanctions you took against the aggressor,” Poroshenko said.
President Duda was the only foreign head of state to attend the celebrations.

In 2014 Moscow annexed the Crimean peninsula, until then part of Ukraine. Russia also supports rebel fighters in Donbas, providing them with weapons and soldiers. The risk of a serious escalation of the fighting is still present.
Bilateral relations
Later on Wednesday, Duda and Poroshenko were set to discuss the future relations of the two countries. These will include peace in Ukraine, the prospects of stability for the region, Polish-Ukrainian relations and relations between the EU and Ukraine, the Polish presidential office said in a statement.
