A family court in the southern German town of Kirchheim unter Teck has ordered that a newborn taken away from her Polish mother merely three days after birth should be returned to the family.

The little girl was taken away and placed in a foster family at the behest of the German children’s welfare agency, the Jugendamt, in early August.

According to the agency, little Lenka’s welfare was at risk because of such issues as her mother’s difficult financial situation. The family will now receive support from a midwife and a social worker in caring for the baby.

The Polish Ministry of Justice became involved in the case. "I think that such incidents should not take place," said Polish Minister of Justice Zbigniew Ziobro last week.

The Jugendamt has been criticised in Poland over controversial cases in which the children of Polish-German and Polish couples living in Germany were taken away. (mol/pk)
