At a press conference with the leaders of the Visegrad Group countries – the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia – and Merkel, Szydło said Britain’s recent referendum vote to leave the EU should prompt reflection about reforms in the bloc.

She said: "We need to draw conclusions from Britain’s decision and we have to think about what reforms of the EU are necessary to allow it to function better, to develop better, so that there is no temptation in other countries to leave."

Friday's talks were intended to lay the groundwork for an informal EU summit in Bratislava in mid-September.
