Hungarians pay tribute to Poland’s Father Popiełuszko

A square in the Obuda district of the Hungarian capital Budapest has been dedicated to the Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko, a Polish priest who was murdered in 1984 by secret police agents.

The site contains a memorial in the shape of a rosary made of large stones connected by a metal chain. Some of the stones have quotations from Father Popiełuszko’s homilies inscribed on them.
There is also an information board with a short biographical note. Three trees were planted close to the memorial, commemorating Popiełuszko, Polish-born Saint John Paul II and Poland’s Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński.
The ceremony brought together representatives of the Hungarian government, the Polish ambassador to Hungary and a large group of Hungarians and Poles.
Popiełuszko Square is located close to a square commemorating Polish officers killed by the Soviet NKVD police in Katyń forest in 1940. (mk/pk)
