Poland is preparing a final push in a bid to be chosen as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, President Andrzej Duda said on Friday.

“This is an extremely important and very prestigious matter. We are now in the final stage of applying for non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council,” Duda said at a joint press conference with Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski.
Duda added: “Since the choice will be made in June 2017... considering there is not much more than half a year left, this is exactly the time... to start a final, decisive effort to promote [our] candidacy.”
The UN Security Council consists of five permanent members (China, France, Russia, the UK and US), and 10 non-permanent members elected by the organisation’s General Assembly for a term of two years.
One non-permanent place goes to a country from Eastern Europe. From the latter group, Bulgaria has put itself forward as a candidate as well as Poland. (pk)
