The trip is Waszczykowski's first visit to Athens since the leftist Syriza party took power, a ministry spokeswoman told Poland's PAP news agency.

“This will be the first official visit of a Polish foreign minister to Greece since Alexis Tsipras’s Syriza took power in January 2015," she said.

She added that talks in Athens and Nicosia will centre on the migration crisis.

Waszczykowski is to meet with Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos in Athens on Thursday and will hold talks with his Greek counterpart, Nikos Kotzias.

The goal of Waszczykowski’s visit is to reinvigorate political dialogue and boost Polish-Greek trade.

“The talks in Athens will also address the challenges that a united Europe must take on in the near future so as not to lose its citizens’ trust,” the spokeswoman said. (rg)
