Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło has likened Donald Trump’s victory in US presidential elections to the Law and Justice (PiS) party's win in parliamentary elections in Poland a year ago.

In an interview with Reuters news agency, Szydło said: "Something is changing in how politicians are being perceived and how people make their choices."

"People aren't picking politicians who are connected with current political elites,” she added.

“People are saying, 'No, we don't want this'...This is how Law and Justice won in Poland".

She expressed confidence that Trump would stand by decisions adopted at NATO’s Warsaw summit in July, where the Western alliance decided to bolster its military presence in Central and Eastern Europe.

"The decisions taken in Warsaw are crucial. They are important for peace in our region, for security, also globally," Szydło said.

"We cannot take direction from the mood born in an election campaign. Some decisions are taken regardless of changes in the administration in any country and they are later fulfilled," she said.

In her interview, Szydło also spoke about Polish-German relations, saying that a fourth term in office for German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s would be good news for Poland.

“Personally, I am rooting for Angela Merkel and I hope she will be chancellor,” Szydło said. (mk/vb)
