The talks in Warsaw focused on the EU’s asylum and neighbourhood policies.

Muscat wrote on Twitter after meeting Szydło that they had a "frank discussion on migration.”

Maltese Foreign Minister George M. Vella, who also took part in the meeting, wrote that he now has “a deeper understanding of the position of Poland as regards migration.”

Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Konrad Szymański told the PAP news agency: “If proposals presenting a real compromise [on asylum policy] appear [on the part the Maltese presidency], we will approach them constructively.”

Malta will take over the rotating presidency of the EU Council on January 1. (mol/pk)
