Poland’s Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski has said that the resignation of the Italian Prime Minister could lead to “big changes” in Italy and the country’s possible exit from the eurozone.

In a referendum on Sunday, Italians overwhelmingly voted to reject a number of proposed changes to the constitution. As a result, Italian PM Matteo Renzi announced he would step down.

Speaking to Polish Radio on Monday, Waszczykowski said that a power vacuum in the top echelons of Italian government could lead to a new centre-right coalition forming in the country.

He added that if this were to happen, it “could herald big changes in Italian politics, including removing the country from the eurozone”.

Hot on the heels of Brexit, this “would be a major blow not only for the EU but also for the eurozone”, Waszczykowski said.

Italy is the third largest economy in the European monetary union.
