Int’l security worse than last year: Polish FM

The international security situation is worse than it was 12 months ago, Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski has said.

Speaking at an annual Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) meeting, Waszczykowski called the current security situation “complex, unpredictable and demanding”.
Pointing to the “illegal annexation” of Crimea by Russia in 2014, Waszczykowski said the OSCE can help to resolve conflicts and improve stability on condition that “all parties abide by the rules.”
He added that the organization’s efforts in Ukraine, which include a Special Observer Mission, are “overshadowed by the overall situation.”
In attendance at the meeting in Germany, which currently holds the presidency of the organization, were about 50 OSCE countries’ foreign ministers. They included US Secretary of State John Kerry and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.
The OSCE originated as the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, which was set up after the end of the Cold War to mediate dialogue between the East and West. (vb/pk)
