Duda met his German counterpart Joachim Gauck in Berlin on Sunday during commemorations marking the 25th anniversary of the signing of a treaty between Poland and Germany.

"Following decades of storms, following decades of drama, we are now seeing a decade of good friendship based on truth, based on partnership and mutual understanding,” Duda said.

“There is a good atmosphere between us [...] there is still a friendship,” Germany's Gauck said.

“A bridge was constructed between us, which we both probably did not expect,” he added.

In 2016, Warsaw and Berlin marked the 25th anniversary of the Polish-German Treaty of Good Neighbourship and Friendly Cooperation.

Signed in 1991, the treaty set Poland and Germany on a path of reconciliation, several decades after Nazi Germans inflicted mass destruction on Poland during World War II. (rg)

“There is a good atmosphere between [...] there is still friendship,” Germany's Gauck said.

“A bridge was constructed between us, which we both probably did not expect,” he added.
