The current sanctions, imposed in 2014 following Russia’s annexation of Crimea, are valid until the end of January 2017.

“I have been talking constantly to Russia, and Russia makes commitments that it is not keeping. Now it is time for us to conclude a cease-fire,” said French President Francois Hollande ahead of the summit.

Poland, represented at the summit by Prime Minister Beata Szydło, was among the EU countries that was in favour of a longer extension of the sanctions.

However, there were some voices, including Italy, which said that a way could be found to re-establish business dialogue with Russia. (rg)
